Director of Operations and Advancement at Malkhut

Malkhut’s Director of Operations and Advancement holds and moves forward the big picture of Malkhut’s vision and strategy in partnership with Rabbi Goldenberg, who is Malkhut’s founder, spiritual leader, and executive director.

The Director manages daily operations, finances, and data systems, as well as designs and executes fundraising campaigns and Malkhut’s Partnership program (akin to membership.) They manage Malkhut’s relationship with our fiscal sponsor, Beloved. The Director supervises program, operations, and communications staff, assigning roles and tasks and oversees Malkhut staff’s cultivation of relationships with lay leaders, Partners, volunteers, and other Malkhut participants. 

This is a hybrid position with a combination of at-home work, virtual meetings, and in-person meetings and events.

Responsibilities

Vision and Strategy

Work with Rabbi to:

  • Implement strategic plan and set organizational goals

  • Set agenda and calendar for Malkhut’s Organizational Development Circle (akin to a Board of Directors)

  • Oversee program calendar


Staff Supervision/Coordination

  • Supervise Director of Engagement and coordinate their work within the big picture of Malkhut’s vision and programming calendar

  • Supervise Shammes and Zoom technician

  • Coordinate staff coverage of events 

  • Set agenda and calendar for staff meetings, manage meetings and delegate tasks to appropriate Malkhut staff member

  • Hold and organize Malkhut’s staff Slack space and Google Drive as our virtual office


Event planning, space rentals, and logistics

  • Oversee relationships with ongoing and new venues, secure space for major and ongoing events and delegate/oversee space procurement by other staff as is appropriate; make site visits

  • Set up zoom links, manage back end of livestreaming and zoom logistics

  • For major events such as the High Holy Days, oversee logistics and schedule, liaise with location(s) regarding space usage, A/V, coordinate tech rehearsals, load in/load out


Development: campaigns, grants, major gifts

  • Partner with Rabbi Goldenberg to design, schedule, set goals, and execute fundraising appeals and campaigns (High Holy Days, end of secular year, and special appeals/campaigns); solicit sponsors and/or pitch-givers for relevant campaigns

  • Create fundraising related emails, forms, and other communications 

  • Oversee Partnership program, track new and continuing Partners’ gifts, and delegate individual outreach to new and existing Partners to staff and lay leadership

  • Major gifts: work with Rabbi, Org Dev Circle, and others to identify major donors; delegate outreach to major donors whether from staff or lay leaders; draft proposals

  • Identify grant opportunities and coordinate grant applications and reporting

Development: cultivation

  • Cultivate relationships with Partners and donors through 1:1s  and presence at events

    • Attend at least 2 Malkhut events per month (Shabbat, holiday, or other gathering) in different neighborhoods in order to build relationships 

  • Plan and host Partner convenings with lay leaders, Rabbi Goldenberg, and Director of Engagement

  • Collaborate with Director of Engagement to optimize use of CRM (EveryAction) to track donor cultivation, track engagement, maintain data, generate reports, train and support staff

  • Plan and carry out donor appreciation, thank-you gifts, and mailings


Finances and Administration

  • Create and manage budget under supervision of Rabbi Goldenberg, delegating relevant tasks to other staff

  • Manage Mazlo (Beloved’s financial tracking software) 

  • Create quarterly P&L reports against budget using Mazlo and EveryAction data

  • Manage Malkhut finances and contracts under supervision of Rabbi Goldenberg and in partnership with Beloved staff

  • File, code and track expenses and income in Mazlo and EveryAction

  • Manage staff compensation and other payments

  • Other administrative, HR, and office management duties as needed such as maintaining office closed calendar, staff vacations, digital subscriptions, manage Malkhut supply inventory, order supplies when needed


Qualifications and core competencies

  • Live in or near Western Queens, able to work remotely from home and to commute easily to staff in-person events in various locations in Queens

  • Identify with the mission of Malkhut (see “About Malkhut” above)

  • Attention to detail, and strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills

  • Takes initiative to implement new systems and efficiencies to support the organization

  • Experience and demonstrated success with development strategy, fundraising campaign design and execution, grant-writing, and donor cultivation

  • Experience with:

    • organizational planning and goal-setting; event and program planning

    • supervising staff

    • planning agendas and leading meetings

    • building and tracking budgets, tracking and coding financial transactions, & building and running financial reports

  • Proficient in Google Drive, Google sheets, and Google docs; experience with CRM databases and email design software

  • Able to work independently, productively and happily in a fluid, entrepreneurial environment

  • Experience working in a secular or Jewish non-profit or synagogue a plus

Time, compensation, and benefits

  • Salary range: $32,250-$34,500 commensurate with experience

  • 20 hours/week 

  • During the High Holy Day season (from September 5, 2026 through October 5, 2026) any hours above 20 hours in a given week are compensated at an hourly rate with a maximum of 27 hours per week in this period 

  • Responsibilities include some meetings on weekday evenings (usually on Zoom)

  • The Director is required to attend at least 2 in-person Shabbat or holiday gatherings per month. Shabbat gatherings take place on Friday nights and Saturday mornings, and holiday gatherings can occur on a weekday or weekend during the day or evening

  • One week’s worth of paid vacation hours

  • One staff retreat per year (most years) with stipend and travel costs covered


Important dates:

  • The Director is required to be present in person on Rosh Hashanah morning (Sept 12), Kol Nidre evening (Sept 20), and Yom Kippur (Sept 21). Exact times TBD.

  • The Director will host Partner convenings on the evenings of Wed Sept 30, 2026 (in-person in the Jackson Heights sukkah), Wed Jan 20, 2027 (on Zoom), and Thurs Apr 1, 2027 (in person, location TBD)
